Visa – Development of Mass Transit Transaction Model (Specification)

The Assignment

 

 

The Head of Visa Global Transit Solutions (VGTS) approached Consulting Smart to seek advice and support with the development of a new payment specification for use in Mass Transit. The complexity of soon-to-be decommissioned specifications and migration of existing Merchants and Transit providers required careful consideration for rollout and product roadmap.

Our Involvement

Our most senior Payments Consultant accepted a 1-year assignment to develop the new specification and was embedded into the VGTS team. By representing Visa at Industry events, on standards boards and acting as Subject Matter experts to clients and tech partners, our Consultant was able to shape not only the Visa specification but also influence how rapidly it could be adopted.

 

 

Our Approach

First, our consultant analysed the existing specification, reviewed Visa’s strategic aspirations for contactless payments in mass transit and then engaged with key internal and external stakeholders including Passenger Transport Operators, Train Operating Companies, Tech Providers and Payment Service Providers to gather insights and needs that would influence the development of the new specification. Then over the next 6 months, the specification was developed in a modular way using Agile techniques.

 

 

Our Clients Results

After 2 failed attempts over the previous 18 months the Senior Leadership Team within VGTS were delighted with the quality of the specification, the speed with which it was achieved and how well it was received by clients and tech partners alike.

In fact, the level of enthusiasm for the work of the VGTS team after the launch of the new specification was such that the budget for the following year was increased to enable additional initiatives to be undertaken and the head of the team was promoted to VP.
