Oyster Card

The Assignment

 

 

Our client, Transport for London (TfL) required a client side programme manager for the Oyster Card, a £1.2bn Private Finance Initiative (PFI) project to introduce a common electronic ticketing system across London Underground, London Transport Buses and Croydon Tramlink systems.

Our Involvement

The scope included making ready over 6000 gates across 250 underground stations to accept the new smart tickets, as well as upgrading base infrastructure (including depot computers at bus stations, ticket machine facilities in underground stations and at external sales agent networks, building a complete new central computer transaction clearing system and devising, designing and building a whole new infrastructure for the new tram system.

In addition there was an extensive programme of marketing and education for customers and training of over 7000 staff and agents, as well as re-engineering of ticketing and associated business processes in both organisations.

 

Our Approach

By orchestrating the various partner and suppliers to ensure that all activities were co-ordinated and there was a shared understanding of the plan the Consulting Smart Programme Manager delivered on time. In addition there was no interruption of any of the London Underground or London Bus services. In fact from both a technical and project perspective TfL considered the whole project to be a resounding success.

 

Our Clients Results

TfL were relieved that after a couple of false starts with other organisations and one by themselves, that they finally had a multi-modal smart ticketing solution which was future proofed for the next decade. Consulting Smart Ltd also gained Invaluable experience of what it takes to handle the “people” issues of smartcard implementation in a live transport and very active.

Off the back of this word Consulting Smart Ltd were also able to broker agreements between Oyster and a number of London Boroughs to add the Oyster card application to their smartcard schemes – with very successful results.
