Case Study
P&O FerriesDesign of a Product Management Function.
The Assignment
To set up a small Product Management function to ensure the efficient and ongoing development of new and existing products and services on all P&O Ferries operations, as the product was described by the Chief Transformation Officer as “always an afterthought”. The first three products were all in Freight and includes 2 existing products CRM, Invoicing and the new product of Mobile apps.
Our Involvement
The Chief of Staff at the Post Office with whom we worked on the POca initiative took the role of Chief Transformation Officer at P&O Ferries. He understood the importance of having a Product function and appreciated the outcomes that Consulting Smart had delivered so asked us to set up a small product management function from a “Greenfield Site”.
Our Approach
First, our Principal Consultant and Founder first analysed the existing core competencies to identify which of the required skills already existed and which would need to be developed or acquired/hired.
He then analysed the target project to identify any special skills and experience required immediately. Then the consultant began to implement a version of the Lean-Agile method tailored for the client that enabled the ideation, creation, development and deployment of products, services and features without being overly complex and cumbersome.
Our Clients Results
The outcome for the client was the set-up of a basic Product Function and the benefits include a better understanding of customer needs, faster deployment of features, and upskilled and more satisfied employees with greater motivation. Moreover a 22% uplift in revenues for freight crossings.
