Plymouth University

Discovery Study for Replacement Campus Card Scheme.

 

The Assignment

 

 

The existing card production solution used at Plymouth University for the creation of Student and Staff ID cards had become end-of-life, and with an annual Issue of around 8000 cards, the University recognised that a replacement Card Production solution was long overdue. In addition Access Control within the University was a mix of online and offline solutions provided by 4 different providers to 3 different faculties. Consulting Smart Ltd was commissioned to conduct a study of the existing landscape and deliver a discovery document with recommendations for migration to a new solution.

Our Involvement

Two of our Senior Smartcard Consultants were assigned to this short piece of consultancy as the target date was aggressive and the University had little in the way of available resources and had acknowledged that their experience in this area was very limited.

 

 

 

 

Our Approach

It was decided to create 2 distinct work packages the first to look at the “as in” and the Replacement Card Management System (CMS). The second had a more forward-thinking approach and described the various applications and services that the University could consider for a Point of Arrival (PoA) Multi-application Smartcard Scheme.

 

 

 

 

 

Our Clients Results

The University was pleased with the insights provided and happy that our consultants had been able to transfer some valuable knowledge, sufficient for them to feel confident enough to enter into a procurement process for the CMS.
